Introducing: Unspoken Gesture

Introducing: Unspoken Gesture

INTRODUCING: UNSPOKEN GESTURE

We're thrilled to present Unspoken Gesture, the fourth addition to the Jorum Studio Mainline fragrance collection.

Our Mainline collection is a platform for us to explore technical innovation, which often leads us to contemporary twists on more traditional profiles. Unspoken Gesture, however, is a reinterpretation of the modern 'anti-perfume' phenomenon: a skin scent with presence, an exploration of skin sensations, tactile and tangible yet soft and alluring.

A comforting embrace. Breathing, holding, existing as one.

Heartbeats, a waltz. Ritardando. A chorus of haptic tingles.

Inhale, exhale, taking you with me.

IMPRESSION
Cardamom, Hazelnut, Fig, Almond, Cananga, Violet leaf & Mimosa Absolute

FADE
Hay, Malt, Rice, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Musk & Ambrette seed

Perfumer’s notes

I have long had a fascination with skin-like aromas. The perception of other people’s natural aroma is my earliest memory – I can still vividly recall the smell of each of my grandparents, my parents’ and siblings' skin. It’s perhaps our most primal relationship with the world.

The foundations of Unspoken Gesture grew from a project where I was enlisted to recreate the aroma profile of living koji – cooked rice that has been inoculated with a fermentation culture, Aspergillus oryzae. Live koji was flown and hand-delivered to my laboratory so I could experience it as fresh as possible before recreating it in an analytical manner (not a perfume) to accompany a scientific publication.

I was pleasantly surprised by how human the aroma was – I couldn't stop smelling it and became saddened when the aroma died within a few hours. The fragility of the koji when removed from its perfect conditions made me feel both helpless and frantic – I needed to work fast to capture it. I find fermented aromas fascinating. In my mind, their complex biology hints that they are cradles of life.

Unspoken Gesture presents us with a profile that is vividly rice-like with just the right amount of sweetened spices to further perfume. With wear, you will experience the pollen-drenched mimosa flower taking central stage – delicate yet assertive. As the fragrance develops further,  the skin-like salinity comes forward.

It was not my intention to make a sexualised perfume. This is the story of platonic love, togetherness and the haptic warmth we feel when we embrace a loved one. A fragrance that stays with the person long after you part company, a subtle yet powerful reminder that transcends words. An Unspoken Gesture, as it were.
